Terms and Conditions
What this document is
These are the terms of using Life Essentials. By opening the app, you agree to them.
We have written this in plain English so you can actually read it. If anything is unclear, email us at lifeessentials.app@gmail.com.
These Terms work together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle your information.
1. Who we are
Life Essentials is provided by Life Essentials Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales.
- Registered address: (to be added on company formation)
- Company registration number: (to be added on company formation)
- Contact: lifeessentials.app@gmail.com
When these Terms say "we," "us," or "our," we mean Life Essentials Ltd. When they say "you" or "your," we mean you.
2. What Life Essentials is
Life Essentials is a Christian prayer and spiritual formation app. It is a tool for personal practice: morning, midday, and evening prayer flows, a prayer list, a Bible reflection journal, an unguided timer, and HALT emotional check-ins.
The app is designed for your private use. We do not verify, validate, or evaluate the content of your prayers or reflections. What you put into the app is between you and God. We are not a church, a pastoral counsellor, a therapist, or a substitute for any of those. If you are in spiritual, emotional, or mental health crisis, please contact a qualified human.
We reserve the right to decide the features and shape of the app. We may add, change, or remove features over time. Where a change has a material effect on you, we will tell you in advance (see Section 10).
3. Accepting these Terms
By downloading, opening, or using the Life Essentials app, you accept these Terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the app.
If you are agreeing on behalf of an organisation, you are confirming you have the authority to do so. In practice, Life Essentials is designed for individual personal use, not organisational use.
4. Who can use Life Essentials
You must be at least 13 years old to use Life Essentials.
When you first open the app we ask for your year of birth. If you are under 13, we cannot let you create an account or store your content.
If you are between 13 and the age of digital consent in your country (for example, 16 in Germany), you should have the permission of a parent or guardian to use the app.
You must also have the legal capacity to enter into a contract in your country. If you do not, your parent or guardian can enter into these Terms on your behalf.
5. Your account
You do not need an account to use Life Essentials. The app works fully offline.
If you choose to create an account, so that your content syncs across devices:
- You must provide accurate information (your email address, if we ask for one).
- You are responsible for keeping your password safe, and for anything that happens through your account.
- You must tell us if you believe someone else has gained access to your account, by emailing lifeessentials.app@gmail.com.
- One person, one account. Do not share your account with others.
We may suspend or close your account if these Terms are seriously broken (see Section 12).
6. Subscriptions and payments
Some features of Life Essentials may require a paid subscription. The features included in any subscription, the price, the length of the billing period, and any free trial are shown in the app and in the App Store or Play Store listing at the point of purchase. Purchasing a subscription means accepting the price and terms shown there in addition to these Terms.
How billing works
Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple (through the App Store) or Google (through the Play Store), depending on where you downloaded the app. Their payment terms apply to the transaction. We do not see or store your card details.
Automatic renewal
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. The renewal is billed at the price shown at the time of renewal. Apple and Google may notify you of renewals in line with their own policies.
Cancelling
You cancel a subscription through your Apple ID subscription settings or your Google Play subscription settings — not through us. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep access to subscription features until the end of the current billing period.
If you need help finding the cancellation option, email lifeessentials.app@gmail.com and we'll point you to it.
Free trials
If we offer a free trial, the terms of the trial (length, what's included, what happens at the end) will be shown before you start the trial. Unless you cancel before the trial ends, it will convert into a paid subscription at the price shown.
Price changes
If the price of your subscription changes, Apple or Google will notify you in line with their policies, and you will have a chance to accept the new price or cancel before it takes effect.
Refunds
Refund requests for subscriptions are handled by Apple or Google under their standard refund policies. We are not able to issue refunds directly for subscriptions billed through them.
Nothing in this Section removes your statutory rights as a consumer in your country. Users in the United Kingdom and the European Union have a 14-day right to cancel most online purchases under consumer law. In line with standard practice, by starting to use digital subscription content immediately after purchase you may lose that right — your device or the app store will ask you to confirm this at checkout.
7. Your content
You own everything you write in the app — your prayer list items, your journal entries, your Examen reflections, your HALT notes, any other personal content you create.
To provide the service, we need a limited licence from you. By saving content in the app, you grant Life Essentials Ltd a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, back up, transmit, and display that content solely for the purpose of providing the service to you.
This licence is:
- Personal — we can only use your content to deliver the app to you. Not for marketing, advertising, training AI, sharing with partners, or any other purpose.
- Terminable — when you delete content, the licence for that content ends. When you delete your account, the licence ends for everything.
We do not acquire any other rights to your content. We do not acquire any moral rights. Your content remains yours.
What we commit to, specifically
- We do not train AI on your content. Not our own models, not anybody else's. See the Privacy Policy for the detail.
- We do not sell or rent your content.
- We do not share your content with advertisers, data brokers, or anyone outside the sub-processors listed in our Privacy Policy.
8. Acceptable use
When using Life Essentials, you must not:
- Use the app for any illegal purpose, or to help anyone else break the law.
- Try to gain unauthorised access to our systems, other users' accounts, or any part of the app not intended for you.
- Copy, scrape, or extract data from the app in bulk, including by automated means.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the app, except to the extent that applicable law expressly permits you to do so.
- Interfere with the operation of the service — for example by overloading it, introducing malware, or attempting to bypass security measures.
- Impersonate anyone, including us or another user.
- Resell, sublicense, or redistribute the app or your access to it.
If the app ever adds features that let you interact with other users (for example, shared prayer lists or community features — not in v1.0), additional acceptable-use rules will apply and we'll make them clear at the time.
9. Our content and intellectual property
The Life Essentials app, its name, logo, design, code, written copy, liturgical text we have written, and any illustrations or other assets we have created, belong to Life Essentials Ltd (or to the people we have licensed them from).
Your licence to use the app is:
- Personal — for your own use.
- Non-exclusive — we can let others use it too.
- Non-transferable — you cannot pass it on.
- Revocable — we can end it in line with these Terms (see Section 12).
The written liturgical content in the app includes both original compositions (copyright Life Essentials Ltd) and public domain texts (for example, the Lord's Prayer and the Kyrie). You can pray any of this content; you cannot copy the original compositions for publication elsewhere without permission.
Scripture references in the app point to passages you can read in your own Bible. We do not distribute the text of the Bible in the app.
10. Availability of the service
We want the app to be there when you need it. We will do our best to keep it available. But:
- We do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free service.
- We may take the service down for scheduled maintenance or to fix urgent problems, with or without notice.
- Because Life Essentials is offline-first, the core prayer flows work on your device even if our servers are unavailable.
If something breaks, please let us know at lifeessentials.app@gmail.com.
Changes to the app
We may add, change, or remove features. If a change has a material effect on you — for example, removing a feature you rely on, or requiring a subscription for something that was free — we will notify you in the app at least 30 days before the change takes effect.
For other changes (bug fixes, small improvements, new features), we will release updates through the app store without prior notice.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. If we do:
- For a minor change (clarifying wording, correcting a reference), we will update the version number and the "last updated" date and post the new Terms in the app.
- For a material change (a new obligation on you, a change to subscription terms, a change to liability), we will notify you in the app at least 30 days before the change takes effect. We will also ask you to accept the new Terms before continuing to use the paid features, if applicable.
If you do not accept a material change, you can close your account under Section 12.
A full version history is kept at the bottom of this document.
12. Ending your use of the service
You can stop using Life Essentials at any time
You can stop using the app at any time, for any reason, without telling us. You can delete individual content in the app, or delete your whole account from Settings, which purges your content within 30 days.
If you have a paid subscription, cancelling through Apple or Google stops the next renewal. You keep subscription access until the end of the current billing period. See Section 6.
We can suspend or end your access
We can suspend or end your access to the app, with or without notice, if:
- You seriously or repeatedly break these Terms.
- We are required to do so by law.
- We are retiring the service.
If we end your access because you broke the Terms, we may refuse to give you a refund, to the extent permitted by law. If we retire the service, we will give you reasonable notice and a reasonable chance to export your content.
What survives
The provisions of these Terms that by their nature should continue after your use ends — including Section 7 (your content), Section 9 (intellectual property), Section 13 (warranties and liability), and Section 14 (governing law) — continue to apply.
13. Warranties and liability
Please read this section carefully. It is one of the places where the legal and the practical meet.
We provide the app "as is"
The app is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We do not make any promises about:
- Uninterrupted operation, or that the app will always be available
- That the app will meet every requirement you may have
- That any content in the app is suitable for any particular purpose
- That every bug will be fixed, or fixed within any specific time
We are a small team doing our best.
Limitation of our liability
To the maximum extent allowed by the law where you live, our total liability to you — for any claim arising out of or connected to your use of Life Essentials, whether in contract, tort, or otherwise — is limited to:
- The greater of (a) £100, or (b) the amount you paid us for the service in the 12 months before the claim arose.
We are not liable for:
- Loss of income, profits, business, or goodwill.
- Loss of data, except to the extent caused by our own failure to maintain reasonable security (in which case Section 8 of the Privacy Policy applies).
- Indirect, consequential, or incidental losses.
What we do not exclude
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for:
- Death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
- Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
- Any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under the law where you live.
Consumer rights
Nothing in these Terms affects your rights as a consumer under the laws of your country of residence. In the United Kingdom, this includes rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. In the European Union, this includes rights under the Unfair Contract Terms Directive and the Consumer Rights Directive. In other countries, local consumer protection law applies.
14. Governing law and disputes
Which law applies
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
This does not take away consumer rights you may have under the mandatory law of your country of residence. If you are a consumer in the United Kingdom, United Kingdom consumer law applies. If you are a consumer in the European Union, the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live applies. The same is true for other countries with mandatory consumer protection law.
How we resolve disputes
If you have a problem with the service, please start by emailing us at lifeessentials.app@gmail.com. Most problems are resolved this way, often quickly.
If we cannot resolve a dispute by email, either of us can take the matter to court.
- If you are a consumer living in the United Kingdom or the European Union, you can bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live, or in the courts of England and Wales. You may also use the online dispute resolution platform provided by the European Commission at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.
- If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you can bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live, or in the courts of England and Wales.
- If you are a business user, disputes go to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
We agree that the courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction for proceedings we bring against you.
15. Other
If part of these Terms is unenforceable
If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest stays in force. We will treat the unenforceable part as replaced by whatever enforceable version is closest to what we meant.
No waiver
If we do not enforce a provision of these Terms on one occasion, that does not mean we give up the right to enforce it on other occasions.
The whole agreement
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any terms shown in the app or at the point of purchase for a subscription, are the whole agreement between you and us about Life Essentials. They replace any earlier version.
No transfer
You cannot transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms to anyone else without our written permission. We may transfer ours, for example if the company is sold, as long as your rights under these Terms are protected.
Language
These Terms are written in English. If we provide a translation, the English version is the authoritative one.
16. How to contact us
